Building Science Basics (NYSERDA) | CSG Learning and Development

Building Science Basics

Cost: $39.99 (discounted rate) | eligible for 1.5 BPI CEUs

Building Science Basics introduces the link between building science and home performance. The course describes ways to ensure the health and safety of everyone associated with building performance work, and explains the ‘house as a system’ concept. In addition, it covers the effects that heat, air, and moisture can have on home performance, and what can be done to control these effects.

As with all CSG online courses, this course features engaging and graphically-rich video clips, supplemental text pages, and interactive scenarios, all designed to maximize student attention and retention.

This course takes three hours to complete and qualifies for 1.5 BPI Continuing Education Credits. Once you purchase this course, you have 60 days to complete it.

Click here to register and view the Building Science Basics training video. The training is available at a discounted rate of $39.99 and is eligible for 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the Building Performance Institute (BPI).

Air-Sealing Diagnostics (NYSERDA) | CSG Learning and Development

Air Sealing Diagnostics Screenshot

This video course is a collection of four clips. In the first, Dale Sherman uses a cross-sectional model of a house to define the pressure boundary for the viewer. The second and third clips cover zonal pressure diagnostics in the attic and garage zones, as well as demonstrating the blower door testing procedure. In the last clip, Robert Kahabka (Northern Comfort Diagnostics) goes over thermal imaging with a blower door in his live demo. Robert discusses what to look for when analyzing both interior and exterior walls, and how to efficiently use the instrument for effective air sealing.

Click here to register and view the NYSERDA-specific Air-Sealing Diagnostics training video. The training is available at no cost but requires registration.

Registering for the training grants access to four separate videos:

  • Defining the Pressure Boundary
  • Zonal Pressure Diagnostics – Attic Zone
  • Zonal Pressure Diagnostics – Garage Zone
  • Thermal Imaging with a Blower Door

Air-Sealing Methods (NYSERDA) | CSG Learning and Development

Air Sealing Methods Video Screenshot

In these training videos the technical details of how to properly air seal both recessed lighting and a chimney chase are discussed by the host, Al McMahon. Al takes a hands-on approach in showing these techniques, as he demonstrates on a model recessed lighting box and chimney chase. The last two clips cover guidelines for air sealing basements and provides a more general introduction to advanced air sealing, hosted by Robert Kahabka (Northern Comfort Diagnostics). This portion follows a similar hands-on approach as Robert demonstrates using tracer smoke in a sample basement and does a walk-through of the advanced air sealing protocol.

Click here to register and view the NYSERDA-specific Air-Sealing Methods training video. The training is available at no cost but requires registration.

Registering for the training grants access to four separate videos:

  • Air Sealing Recessed Lights
  • Air Sealing a Chimney Chase
  • Guidelines for Air Sealing Basements
  • Introduction to Advanced Air Sealing

Building Science Lite (NYSERDA) | CSG Learning and Development

Building Science Lite Video Screenshot

This video collection is perfect for those brand new to Building Science. QA Manager Mark Hutchins, of CSG’s Applied Building Science group, explains the basic scientific principles that affect a home’s energy efficiency and comfort. The clips explain CSG’s concept of the house as a system and explore thermodynamics, which is the science of energy movement. In the case of houses, that mainly means heat. Mark describes the ways heat moves, and why insulation is only part of the solution.

Click here to register and view the NYSERDA-specific Building Science Lite training video. The training is available at no cost but requires registration.

The video collection is comprised of four sections, each less than five minutes in length:

  • House as a System
  • Intro to Thermodynamics – Conduction
  • Convection
  • Radiation

All four segments are available to watch by filling out the registration link above.

Gas Leak Detection (NYSERDA) | CSG Learning and Development

Gas Leak Detection Video

You know what the number one QA failure is for both EmPower and Home Performance? Gas leaks. Whether the issue is your equipment, technique or maintenance, this video will give you the knowledge needed to avoid future DOC’s and QAIN’s. Most importantly, you will be given the tools to keep your customers and staff safe.

This ten minute webinar will cover the equipment to do the leak detection, accepted techniques, what to do if you find a gas leak, and detector maintenance.

NYSERDA is establishing specifications for gas leak detection equipment across programs and BPI is likely to be following suit in the near future. Does your equipment meet these new specs? Is your staff knowledgeable as to how to properly find and report leaks? These webinars are part of a multi-faceted effort by NYSERDA to assist contractors in improving their gas leak detection rates.

Click here to register and view the NYSERDA-specific Gas Leak Detection training video. The training is available at no cost but requires registration.
